Christianity has its own calendar, with its own seasons to be lived through. Unlike secular calendars, however, the purpose of the Christian calendar is not to mark time, but instead to help those who follow the Christian way to celebrate and more fully understand and follow this way. The Christian year begins at the end of November or beginning of December when we prepare for God's entrance into our world through the birth of Jesus. We move through Jesus' birth, life, death and resurrection as we make our way through the year. It is important that we not rush through any season of the Christian calendar. All of the seasons are equally important to understanding this path that we are following. Fully living into each season brings us a little closer to the mystery that is God.
These Advent meditations are our gift to you as you walk through the season of Advent. We hope that the meditations written by members of St. Paul's that you find within these pages will help you to pause and take a moment to embrace the season that is Advent. There are many themes that could be embraced during this season. We have chosen four to focus on this year: waiting, preparation, hope and mystery. In your waiting and preparation may you discover anew the mystery that is God, and may your hope be renewed.
May your Advent be a blessed one!
Peace,
Suzannah +
