Shortly after I was asked to write about waiting, I began to mull over what I would write. Should I focus on the type of waiting which is merely an annoyance such as waiting for a traffic light to change or for the person in front of me in the grocery store to finish fishing out the change in the bottom of her purse? Or should I write about waiting for something that becomes a consuming issue such as a holiday or retirement perhaps? Somehow I wasn’t very inspired. We all experience frustration, we all experience anticipation- not much to say about this. And then a few days later one of my good friends posted something on Facebook which stuck with me on first reading and stayed with me. The post is a quote from Sarah Ben Breathach, “Whatever we are waiting for--peace of mind, contentment, grace, the inner awareness of simple abundance; it will surely come to us, but only when we are ready to receive it with an open and grateful heart.”
I was drawn back to this quote repeatedly. Can you identify what it is you are waiting for? Is your heart open to whatever comes to you? I am not sure what it is that I am waiting for, this will take some continued reflection and prayer. And I also pray that when it is given to me, I have an open and grateful heart and recognize how blessed I am.
